7 BILLION LOVED!

On October 31, 2011 the world’s population officially reaches 7 billion.  That means 7 billion persons loved passionately, relentlessly, and sacrificially in ways beyond our merely human comprehension.  To mark this notable “milestone,” here are a few other “theodemographical” reflections. 7 billion exceeds my mind’s grasp.  Much of the world’s population concentrates in a relatively few places, however, and I am regularly in some of those places, such as Lagos, Nigeria with its 25 plus million and nearby Ibadan with its 26 plus million.  By any measure, these two cities are mega-cities, filled with teeming masses of humanity, and yet even they combined are dwarfed by 7 billion! In the world’s mega-cities so many people have no place and scant …

JESUS AND DECONSTRUCTION

Either Jesus will deconstruct us or we will deconstruct Jesus.  We must seek the former and flee the latter.  We must flee the possibility of deconstructing Jesus like the plague and long for Jesus to deconstruct us like the only vaccine for a plague that will otherwise wipe us out. For some who may not be sure, to deconstruct is to understand something only in terms of the ideas and contexts we bring to it.  Thus, we understand the concept of “good” or “right” or “beautiful” as a function of what we assert is good or right or beautiful.  There is no such thing as “good,” for instance, apart from the content or definition I ascribe to it or bring …

WHY JESUS SUPPORTS A PALESTINIAN STATE

Against all the odds, and in the face of a “lethal-veto” from the U.S., the Palestinian Authority lodged an official request to the United Nations that it recognize a Palestinian State among the nations of the world.  I am not a geo-political scientist or strategist and I am certainly no expert in international law or diplomacy.  Even so, I am convinced that if Jesus had a vote he would cast it in favor of recognizing a Palestinian State. Jesus would vote “yes” as a matter of simple justice (though I am sure it would not be simple actually to work out!).  Shouldn’t every people group have a place they call “home?”  Shouldn’t everyone’s home enjoy whatever protection the community of …

On Avoiding Default, Fighting Terror and Following Jesus

Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life … “ (John 14:6).  Christ followers claim to believe it, or him.  In the current climate of tolerance and political correctness followers of Jesus will respectfully but firmly insist that Jesus’ way is the way like no other, that doing it Jesus’ way gets us to the core of what is real and alive, and that following Jesus’ way is not only a good idea but is wise, beautiful, right and the best hope of good for all.  We who follow Christ really believe it. And yet … do we really believe it?  Is Jesus’ way helpful, saving, game-changing in matters transcending our own immediate  personal living, in matters …

WHO SHOULD WE BAIL OUT?

I write in the midst of the worst economic crisis in anyone’s recent memory.  Greed, carelessness, incompetence and other things have forced the government to consider, and us to accept, a mind-blowing IOU from the U.S. tax-payers to bail out various and sundry financial enterprises, and in time the US economic enterprise as a whole.  Though a "bail-out" proposal has now stalled for a second time, triggering a massive drop–or is it a free-fall?–on Wall Street, I remian reasonably confident a plan will be approved. But it’s got me thinking about the whole notion of a bail-out, and what kind of bail-out most coheres with a Kingdom-of-God perspective.  From that perspective, while the current bail-out plans seem necessary given the …
